.mobi domain is coming

“Dot mobi” domain is coming. It’s not yet open as at the moment only mobile companies can register trademarked .mobi domain names. After that, in mid-June other industries’ trademark holders will be able to register domains before they open to the general public on 28th of August.
Not exactly the true Symbian news, but it’s pretty related, specially when you know that this initiative was led by Nokia and approved by ICANN. Now, it’s supported by companies like Ericsson, Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), Google (NSDQ: GOOG), and Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT), among others.
What I see is the great opportunity for content providers and developers to present and sell directly to the consumer via this new .mobi part of the Internet. It will be interesting to watch the battle for the mobile consumer’s attention.
Red Herring has a great article on the subject.
