The new Communicator ideas

I was thinking about the features I would like to see in the next Communicator and have decided to rant about it. Let’s start with an existing product and we’ll work from there. You may have seen Nokia (NYSE: NOK) 9300 and Nokia 9300i (9300 with integrated WiFi). It has a pretty descent look (Symbian Series 80) and and it’s not that big when you compare it with 9500 or any other Windows Mobile powered device with full QWERTY keyboard. Overall, it’s not that far away from “the perfect thing”. However…
- It should be faster. Nokia 9300i has a 150MHz processor!? That’s way too slow. Specially, when you try to browse more complex web pages. No wonder there is no new Opera for Series 80.
- I want camera. Yes, I know that is the business phone and that many other business smartphones from Nokia don’t have camera, but I want it anyway. Even more, I want 3.2 MP N80 camera with flash light on the new communicator, not the useless VGA camera the 9500 has.
- It should be smaller. There is plenty of space between the screen and the edge. But, please (if anyone from Nokia is reading this) keep the keyboard size the same.
- Joystick for navigation should be improved. Please use the one from the NSeries. It’s much better and more precise. I don’t want the ESeries kind of joystick.
- Even more – higher resolution and stylus are optional. I would say mandatory, but I’m afraid that other (older) Series 80 applications wouldn’t work in the new environment. If Nokia could somehow manage to make this work as well (to improve the Series 80 platform and to keep the compatibility with older applications), it would be perfect!
That’s about it. If you’re in contact with someone from Nokia – send him this post, I hope they will listen and that we’ll soon have much better communicator on the market.
