E-series smartphone owners will be glad to know that Nokia (NYSE: NOK) recently released the update for their devices. I’ve already posted about the E61 update, now it’s available for the whole “E” range. – E50, E60, E61, and E70.

The first version killed some E70s, but the bug is fixed and E70 owners can now safely update their devices. Here’s the link.

Nokia N75!?

In Devices, NSeries, Nokia, Rumors, Symbian

Nokia N95!?Potentially new Nokia (NYSE: NOK) smartphones is spotted. The rumor is that the device is Nokia N75, a new addition to the popular Nokia N-series.

Apparently, the device will have a clamshell form factor and the first picture indicates it will look very much like the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) RAZR phone. Other features include QVGA 240×320 display, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS support, 2 MP camera. At the moment it’s not known whether or not the device will sport the WLAN connectivity.

As far as I can tell, the device has all the attributes of the bestseller and I can’t wait to see it in action. :)

UPDATE: I’ve made a typo in this post, as I’ve wrote “N95″ instead of “N75″. Sorry!

By Stefan Constantinescu on Friday, September 15th, 2006 at 8:41 AM PST
In General, Symbian

David Wood from SymbianNew smartphone applications regularly reach out to touch unexpected areas of our lives – areas that we previously thought had nothing to do with smartphones. In his latest insight article David Wood EVP of Research at Symbian takes us through some of the exciting new services available, making it possible for everyone to do more: share more, achieve more, watch more, work more, listen more, play more, live more.

In each case, a relatively low-tech part of life is in the process of being subtly transformed by a relatively unanticipated new application or service on advanced mobile phones. For instance, David argues that smartphone could have its place in such areas of life as golf, TV recording, travel (checking into hotels), health, gambling.

Mobile phones usage reaches 2.5 billion

By Dusan Belic on Thursday, September 14th, 2006 at 1:46 PM PST
In Research

Only 12 months ago there were 2 billion mobile phones around the world. A year later, things have changed with half billion added, reaching the total number of 2.5 billion mobile phones in use.

A quarter of the growth is (of course) coming from China and India, two of the most inhabited countries. But the growth is also coming from Russia, USA, Pakistan, Ukraine, Brazil, Indonesia, Nigeria and Bangladesh.

The cellular industry took 20 years to reach 1 billion connections, three years to reach 2 billion connections and is on target to reach its third billion in a period of just over two years.

What would you change about built-in S60 applications?

By Dusan Belic on Thursday, September 14th, 2006 at 1:45 PM PST
In Applications, General, Symbian

Any ideas? Apparently many of you guys and gals have two cents to add on the top of the existing functionality of the S60 devices, as Tommi’s Blog, part of the S60 Blogs, asked the same question and got some very interesting answers.

Not to bug you too much, here are the top five suggestions:

  • Add built-in Autolock
  • Improve Alarm Clock / Timer
  • Add full in-device search
  • Selectable font size and appearance
  • Improve Standby Screen

For the complete list with all the details check out the Tommi’s post. While you’re there make sure to subscribe to his blog. :)
