Kaspersky Lab's Mobile Malware Evolution report

By Dusan Belic on Monday, October 30th, 2006 at 8:27 AM PST
In Security, Symbian

Mobile MalwareLast month Kaspersky Lab published the first part of its latest analytical report, “Evolution of Mobile Malware: An Overview” by Alexander Gostev, a senior virus analyst. It should be a must-read, as mobile malware can harm you in many ways. Today’s malicious applications have a range of functions, including spreading via Bluetooth or MMS, sending SMS messages, infecting files, providing remote access to smartphones, blocking memory cards, stealing data, and installing other malicious programs.

Luckily, with the version 9, Symbian introduced enhanced platform security. However, the threat isn’t 100% eliminated as users are still not aware enough of the potential threats to their smartphones. Therefore, I urge you to read this report and gain a bit of understanding of how mobile malware applications work and how to protect from them.

Nokia E61i, E65 and E90 Communicator!?

By Dusan Belic on Monday, October 30th, 2006 at 7:51 AM PST
In Devices, ESeries, Nokia, Rumors, Symbian

These days, rumors are spreading around future Nokia (NYSE: NOK) devices. Last week, we found leaked photo of something that could be their next Internet tablet device.

Nokia E90This time, people are talking about further expansion of the Eseries family. Namely, three devices are mentioned - Nokia E61i (potentially slimmer version of E61, with a camera), E65 (business-oriented clone of N80, with a single camera) and a feature-rich E90 which should be the next Communicator. Potential sketches of the last mentioned were found from one of the Nokia’s presentations and are circulating around the blogs.
UPDATE: More info/speculation about the upcoming E90 device - here.

It’s too early to say. The fact is that many people would like a single device with both QWERTY keyboard and a solid camera, and I’m certain that we will see such device somewhere in the future. Also, it seems that the time has come for the next Communicator. This time with a more powerful processor and a S60 3rd edition UI.

In the meantime, all we can do is hope that Nokia is listening.

So far, we’ve all learned that Nokia N95 is the best announced smartphone (”multimedia computer”). And we had a bunch of video previews to virtually experience the joy of using this magnificent device.

This time, thanks to the Nseries WOM World, we’ve found a Russian site Sotovik, which made series of photos comparing N95 with some other devices including Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N73, 9300i and E70.

Plus, GSM arena’s forum has an interesting discussion with a useful table comparing high-end smartphones. Guess who tops? :)
