Someone get the Doc an E62, stat!

By Stefan Constantinescu on Monday, November 20th, 2006 at 10:59 PM PST In Financial/Corporate News

Back when I used to be all wrapped up in the Web 2.0
lifestyle, signing up for new websites everyday, having conversations with the
top "A list bloggers", and sorting thru enough RSS feeds in my reader
to make it impossible for me to ever finish, I met Doc Searls. Docsnake_1

While never speaking to him or exchanging email with him at all, his writing
style makes you feel like you grew up next to the guy. He’s been doing this
whole blogging thing so long he blogs about blogging if you can imagine that. Check out his bio here

So why do I mention good old Doc? He is going to dump Verizon (NYSE: VZ) ASAP and is
looking for a GSM smart phone replacement. His friends recommended the Nokia (NYSE: NOK)
E62 but he isn’t sure about the size of the keys. I think if Nokia introduces
him to both the E61 and E62, telling him what the differences are specification
wise, and gives him a review sample, then that would be money well spent.

You know how a classroom pays attention to a teacher with the sentence "So
the test will be on …"; Well that’s how the entire blogosphere takes to
him. Let him give an honest review and I guarantee Nokia they will have
instantly spoken to the most influential people in the technology industry
today.

    Whoa! Thanks!

For what it’s worth, I think my influence — whatever it is — extends to a very small (though admittedly significant) fraction of the blogosphere, which is less sperical every day. I think it’s shaped like a bad pancake, actually.

Anyway, I’m looking at the Cingular site (hate to say it, but my carrier will probably need to be Cingular… need the local coverage), and … the E62 looks like a Windows device. Is it?

I’m not much interested in 90% of what’s promoted there. No need for Microsoft Office jive. Nor email. A Web browser would be nice, but not if they’re charging me by the packet for it, or $30/month, like VZW did before I killed that “feature”.

Can it work as a GPS? That would be my main interest in a big display.

    Thanks again!

  2. Where to begin Doc! Thanks for checking out my blog. I thought this post would fall on deaf ears.

First of all, use T-Mobile and not Cingular.

    Reasons:

For less than $8/month you get unlimited GPRS (Internet)

Roaming is free so the Cingular towers will work just as well

Now as for the Nokia E62, it has Bluetooth only, and yes it will work with a GPS device. However, there is another version of the E62 called the E61 which is sold in Europe. Don’t let the fact that 61 is smaller than 62 throw you off. The E61 has WiFi as well as Bluetooth, therefore expanding your connection options.

The built in browser on the E61/62 is fantastic since it supports a lot of AJAX heavy sites, but I use Opera Mini more often since it formats the data for the width of the screen so I no longer have to side scroll. Opera Mini is free, but like I said AJAX heavy sites such as gmail or google calendar don’t work too well.

If you have any more questions please feel free to contact me. When/if you get T-Mobile tell them you already have a phone, you just want the SIM card. That’s the most important thing. I can go further in detail about all these terms and concepts if you wish.

  3. TCZero says:

If I’m in the UK, can I pick up a E61 and bring it back to the states without a problem? Any compatability problems I should be on the look-out for. Using Cingular at the moment, although there’s no reason that needs to remain steady.

    Thanks in advance…

  4. Yea it’s a quad band phone, meaning it will work on any GSM network in the world.

    You’re fine mate!

The E61 is a European phone in fact, the USA got the E62 which has no WiFi. I know it’s European because the power adapter definitely isn’t the kind we have here in the states!
