The Nokia N80i is rumoured to be launching with built in support for Gizmo

About two or three months back Michael "Golden Boy" Robertson, the
king of disruption clued me in on some of the goings on with Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and
Gizmo Project that goes beyond the Nokia Internet Tablet project.Specifically he let me know that the N80i would feature the mobile
version of Gizmo. Ironically, that call came on the heals of my Nokia
client telling me the vastly upgraded N80, would be dubbed the N80i. A little sleuthing reveals that Michael and Jason have been up to a lot of good the last few months.Source: VoIP Watch
So let me be the first to say, why not Skype? I don’t know anyone who uses Gizmo, do you?

Gizmo uses SIP which is the protocol that the Nokia VOIP client uses… Skype is a proprietary service.
A protocol of a service used by a community is only as powerful as the network of people behind it.
So I ask again, who uses Gizmo and why couldn’t Nokia work something out with Skype?
Skype is proprietary. This means their protocols are secret and they control who can call their users. They block out anyone they think is a competitor.
GizmoProject has a commitment to an *open network* and we use SIP – an internet standard. This means we will let any network call the users on our network. This means we’ll work with any software or hardware device. This is the way the net should work. We don’t want VOIP ending up like IM where you need 8 different accounts to talk to people. You should have one account on whatever service, software or device you want and be able to call anyone. We have a chance to do this with VOIP and move the world in a sane direction.
So back to Nokia. The reason they’re working with Gizmo Project is because we’re based on SIP – an open, public standard anyone is free to implement. In addition, we are committed to not blocking their calls and offering a top rate service.

Do you think SIP will take off however? Jabber is an open protocol for everyone to use yet Europe and Canada are still dominated by MSN. The US uses AIM.
