This means their protocols are secret and they control who can call their users. They block out anyone they think is a competitor. GizmoProject has a commitment to an *open network* and we use SIP - an internet standard. This means we will let any network call the users on our network. This means we'll work with any software or hardware device. This is the way the net should work. We don't want VOIP ending up like IM where you need 8 different accounts to talk to people. You should have one account on whatever service, software or device you want and be able to call anyone. We have a chance to do this with VOIP and move the world in a sane direction. So back to Nokia. The reason they're working with Gizmo Project is because we're based on SIP - an open, public standard anyone is free to implement.
