Chat with Developer of the Year Winner, Mobizines

“It’s slightly different from a WAP site because the whole content is downloaded to the phone,†he says. “You get a compete edition down to your device, which you can then browse. Because of that, it looks a lot richer than a regular WAP site, and it’s a lot quicker to read, because you can jump from page to page without having to download each one as you go.â€Source: Tech Digest
Check out the whole discussion over at tech digest. Personally magazines are dead. When I think magazines I think giant book of advertisement with content sprinkled in. Sure now there are electronic magazine so you don’t have to read month old content, but those are already delivered via RSS. Of course bad mouthing someones project without trying it is bad news, it might be gold. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) apparently thought it was.

Can’t agree more – I’ve been using Mobizines for a month or so now and they’re actually quite good.
Its one of the best apps I have on my N73.
But James, how often is the content updated? This is all I worry about. With such limited screen real estate is only makes sense to keep pictures and text to a minimum. Therefore why can’t RSS or better yet Nokia’s new Widsets project, do the same thing that Mobizines is?
I think that depends what Mobizine you subscribe to dude..
I’ve got HolyMoly which updates daily as well as Football365 which too updates daily.
But something like GQ (which is what I originally downloaded) only seems to update twice a week.
I’ve just been trialling their Popworld Mobizine – I downloaded it yesterday – and that’s another daily one – and as an on/off popworld fan – it’s actually quite good.
Coming back to the point – I see what you’re saying about Widsets (an app I have used in the past and still do sometimes) thing is – with Mobizines – being a Londoner – I can safely say that the only time I read it is when I’m on the tube.
Once I’ve downloaded the latest content it stays on there til I want the next edition – and I must admit – there is a certian amount of smugness when I whip out my phone and start reading the latest BBC headlines with all whizzy whirry flash animations etc… Hehehe ;o)
But yeah – as for the RSS thing..
I think Mobizines do an RSS variant too y’know – I’ve seen it in my catalogue but haven’t tried it yet so I’m not entirely sure how it works (i think you have to register on their website and stuff) – whether it’s better or worse than widsets remains to be seen.
Have you tried Mobizines?
I’d be interested to read/see what you think – To be fair – I don’t know many people that *don’t* like it…
But then again – most of those people are not that ‘mobile-savvy’ so to speak.. so they wouldn’t have the faintest idea on how to set up a widset.. but as soon as I mentioned to my sister that you could get OK! on her phone she was hooked! lol…
PS – since my original post I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the whole thing as they now have a Symbian 3rd Edition client available – when I first posted I was using the Java variant.
It all seems ok so far…
Well I have to look into how to sign up, frankly it looks like it’s a UK think only, and second it costs money.
I’d rather just subscribe to an RSS feed on my favorite site.
No worries dude –
Take it easy, good blog by the way..
