Hi I have used a Palm device for the past 5-6 years, my last phone was a Treo 650.

I can say the touch screen technology has improved greatly in those 6 years on the Palm.

With the Palms you can use either a stylus or finger to touch the screen. The stylus is for, I guess, accessibility for the device.

Why Nokia didn't use touch in the past? well I guess they were still a phone maker.

Now with the new smart phones, I could see the touch screen features being brought in alot quicker.

thanks

Hi, I'm fighting for it. I also do think that touching should be one of the main goals in future interfaces, and like you without the stylus.
I tried to do that with our project (Canola) and people almost killed me when I said to them "I want to make users able to use this without the stylus.. with thumbs". They said that the will never touch it, and even when I said : it's not far from today the day that we will not let fingerprints on the touchscreens. Ok, I can be dreaming a little too high, but this Nokia videos shows that. You will only be able to use it when some nano-technology-or-something allows you to do that without making the screen dirty.

Well, No I'm waiting for 2 things to make this happen in a killer way:
1) high precision / dpi touchscreens (it's coming, like those concepts from sinapts : onyx fone)
2) tactile feedback: to be able to give user real feeback when interacting.

Let's hope this things become reality soon, and more : let's hope nokia doesn't forget about this nice concepts =)

Br from brazil,
