International pop star and Grammy award winner Nelly Furtado will perform in Mumbai on this New Year’s eve, as part of a relay of celebrations by different international stars in five countries.

The global music event will kick off in Hong Kong, followed by concerts at Mumbai, Berlin and Rio de Janeiro and New York. On the choice of Nelly Furtado, Deepak Kishore, director-marketing, Nokia India said, “For Nelly, India is a special place. She has worked with an Indian band ‘Josh’ in Canada, and she also knows a few Hindi songs. She is very excited to perform here.”

On the event, Mr Kishore said, “Music is something that is very closely associated with the new year celebrations, and we believe this is the best way to connect with our customers who are mostly youngsters.”

A combined attendance of 1.3 million and an anticipated global television and internet audience of 150 million is expected. “It is undoubtedly one of the largest music events in the world,” said Mr Kishore.

Some of the other international artistes performing in different countries include the Black Eyed Peas and Scissor Sisters. “Many Bollywood stars would be part of the December 31 event that will be held at the Andheri Sports Complex,” Mr Kishore said.
