How Nokia can whip the Zune’s ass into submission

When I first saw the Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Zune I was impressed that it had built in wireless communications. Then as more and more news came and the device eventually got released I was horribly disappointed to see how castrated it was. Today I did something in class I never did before:

I was chatting with someone I just met, she loves cars, in particular BMW’s. I have a strong passion, desire, and fetish if you will, for that German auto maker, so it was great I met her. Anyway I ask her what model she had, what modifications she did, the works. After all is said and done I want to see this beast. Poor girl started to tear up and told me last week she got into a major accident and the car is in the shop, but she wanted to show me her car anyway. She admired the large screen on my Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E61 and said “Can I send you some pics via bluetooth?”

At that point it hit me like a ton of bricks, there are more music playing phones on the market with bluetooth built in than there are iPod’s and Zunes combined. Why isn’t a feature to swap tunes built into the media player?

More importantly, if the reason this isn’t done is due to the fact that the RIAA has “an asshole tight like 7 year old” to quote my buddy Borat, then why hasn’t a third party stepped up to the plate and created a “Media sharing application”

Why stop at music?! Share photos, ring tones, contacts.

It’s all about the UI, this needs to be done brilliantly, it also needs to be made easy to download. I’m not talking about connecting to a P2P network folks; I’m talking about creating a local connection within Bluetooth’s range.

Imagine how fast this would take off in class rooms where everyone can browse each others phone for tunes and tones. This will cause yet another rise in demand of flash memory, there by increasing production, there by decreasing costs.

Make this app compatible with as many phones as possible, sadly this means probably having to write it in Java, and more importantly make it VERY easy to install. I would want an online guide that would show people how to put a Java installer file on their memory card then run the application from there. You have to remember not everyone has mobile internet on their phones so they can’t just download it. However almost all the phones coming out now have expandable memory; this is a fantastic medium to spread an application like this.

I want someone to work on this, if any of the Nokia developers want to talk it out with me then just send me an email or comment.
