TAIPEI (MarketWatch) — Taiwan Mobile Co. said Wednesday it plans to buy NT$4.8 billion worth of third-generation mobile phone infrastructure equipment from Nokia (NYSE: NOK) Corp.
The purchases, which will include 3G base stations and switches, are part of Taiwan Mobile’s plan to expand its 3G services for the 2007-2009 period, it said in a filing to the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
Taiwan Mobile, the island’s third-largest mobile-phone service provider by revenue aims to improve 3G signals and coverage through the purchases.
Taiwan Mobile said the payment will be made over a three-year period.Source: Market Watch
Left and right I’m hearing about all these countries getting 3G, and all I have to say is what about the USA? Yes Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Sprint (NYSE: S) have EVDO, but it’s $60 a month! Cingular has EDGE, which is slow, and T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) … well we know they said they’ll be implementing WCDMA equipment from Nokia sometime in the next 2 years. I’m impatient, then again I think the entire male species is.
