Browsing Howard Forums I came across this post:

as the title says, but let me elaborate. i put all my songs in one playlist i jsut transfered it through the card reader/writer, so now i have 300 songs but how do i find a specific song faster? can the music player group through id3 tags? or genre or just simple typing it? what about the newer firmwares? i have 3.60

Poor guy, it isn’t his fault Nokia can’t make a competent MP3 playing application for his 6280. What’s more upsetting is that he will never see an upgraded music player application since that would require an entire firmware upgrade. Nokia isn’t going to do that. I need to start a movement at the S60 development team within Nokia. Componentize, componentize, componentize! One shouldn’t need a brand spanking new firmware if you’re just going to update one application!

Back onto the topic of an "iPhone," everyone knows Apple doesn’t bring anything new to the market with its iPod line. What they do correctly however is a drop dead easy to use interface, along with a product that is sexy. Matt is a Nokia employee who gets it, I just wish the rest of the company did:

Design can be taking away, it can be doing less, it can be doing the-same-but-better. And better. And better.

Sometimes the inventions you need are already exist, but haven’t been honed or applied correctly. We went through a big design exercise this year with our business (and some great help – thanks Scott!) and came to similar conclusions.

The dance of the big and the small continues.

UPDATE: Christian Lettenbichler corrected me on a few things. The 6280 isn’t a S60 phone, apparently it’s S40v3. He also states that the 6280 is up to firmware revision 5.92 which does have a better music player. This still doesn’t change my mind that Nokia should componentize their development. Thanks for pointing out my misinformation Chris.

Erm…the 5.92 FW version adds a better music player & A2DP to the 6280, just FYI…and it is not an S60 device, so there is no way to add a decent app without a FW upgrade. IF you have to rant constantly, at least get the facts right…

    Ciao Stephan,

the firmware update is a very hot topic regarding adding new components. It make a lot of sense but there are some issues. I think Nokia is working hard on this since the new S60 platform will have FOTA, Firmware Over The Air updates, which is a really cool capability.
