Basically the design seems the reverse of most thin sliders (e.g. N95 or Samsung) where the lid slides in an U shaped base, where as in E65 the lid is U shaped and the bottom part slides into it. The benefit seems to me to be that the keypad is easier to access; and when closed the "face" looks solid and had more space for function keys - I gather this phone can largely be operated in closed mode provided you have most number you call in contacts. Given that there seems to be a dedicated conference call button or some such like (top left one next to navipad), and all the other VoIP stuff, I bet Nokia is trying hard to sell this to corporations as their "in office" phone to replace or at least complement land lines and desktop phones.
