Sony Ericsson: It’s what computers have become

Remember my 20 New Year’s Resolutions for Nokia? Let me give you a refresher on one of them:
Create a phone so advanced that it can be put in a dock, and this dock would have several USB ports, audio out, and VGA or DVI out. The one laptop per child idea is foolish; there isn’t an infrastructure to support it. What if each of those children had a device the size of an N73 that they can bring to a local center, plug it in, and now use a full size monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Or apply the same scenario to emerging markets.
Look what Sony has just patented:
There is a LOT of detail pertaining to the capabilities of this device over at the source: Unwired View

I am impressed. I wasn’t kidding when I said Sony could easily overtake Nokia in the mid to high end of the market if they made all the right moves.

I cant understand why you are so enthusiastic. This think does not appeal to me – a dock for a mobilphone which is something like a pc? sry, but it looks like totaly nonsense.
I saw this on engadget earlier today, and I had to laugh. How absolutely ridiculous! (I am so amazed, I can’t even spell the word correctly!)
I mean are you really going to carry a docking station around for your phone?
The whole point of the “mobile” phone is to be mobile. Even laptops are too big..(maybe 12″ are fine).
I honestly dont think this will amount to much. I am happy to be proved wrong, but I think I am safe!

it is a docking station
it doesn’t move with you, it stays at your desk
i’m sorry to see you two don’t share my enthusiasm, but i really think this will be huge.
cell phones in less than 5 years will be as fast as computers are today. that means a lot of people could simply stop carrying a computer. a majority of people out there just surf the web, email, IM, and enjoy content.
you don’t need a full blown pc to do that.
”

So you only get the “value” from the device when you are sitting at your desk? What if your a 15 year old kid? How many of those have desks

Like I said, I am happy to be proven wrong!

Now your talking! I completely agree with you on this point. We are seeing it already with devices like the N800 and lots of other devices, the sidekick, and UMPCs.
What I would like to see would be a device, similar size to an N800, with a wireless headset of some sorts. Once its within XXmetres of you, you can make your voice calls without having to key in numbers.
You want to send an e-mail you use the on screen kebo/graffitti.
I am hoping to get an N800 in the next few weeks. I’ll let you know how I get on, IF I get it.
Oh, btw, I am still writing my review of the E61…slow I know
thanks

i think this is actually a good idea but it wont be very popular because the people who cant afford computers probally cant afford expensive feature lacking sony phones then buy the dock, theyll probally just get a cheap laptop!! good idea none the less.
i dont really think sony will surpass nokia because there so called smart phones are very limited. and at least nokia has the smarts to make a quadband smartphone with wifi!
