Renesas Technology Corp will collaborate with the world’s largest cellular phone manufacturer, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) Corp, on the development of platform software for handsets, the Nikkei reported, without identifying sources. The Finnish firm will make its S60 platform software compatible with the Japanese semiconductor manufacturer’s SH-Mobile system chips, which are currently used by domestic manufacturers and South Korean-based LG Electronics Inc, according to the business daily.
Nokia, which buys chips mainly from US-based Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) Inc, has never used a Japanese chipmaker as a supplier of chips for platform software.
By clinching a supply contract with Nokia, Renesas aims to increase its SH-Mobile output to 50 mln units in fiscal 2008 from 20 mln in fiscal 2006, the Nikkei said.
