Phil just posted 3 new Voice of S60 podcasts!

By Stefan Constantinescu on Saturday, February 17th, 2007 at 3:04 PM PST In 3GSM 2007

What a perfect way to start my day seeing as I’ve just woken up.

14:57 on a Saturday, jealous?

Straight from Phil’s blog:

On Thursday of last week, the final day of 3GSM, I recorded three interviews.  First with Jay Andolini of Mobiles.co.uk.  Second with Martin Sauter of Mobile Society.  And finally with Rafe Blandford of AllAboutSymbian & Carlo Longino of Mobhappy.  We had some great conversations, all four are some really sharp guys.  Be sure to check them out!!

Here are some direct links:

  1. Interview with Jay (6.2 MB; MP3)
  2. Interview with Martin (6.5 MB; MP3)
  3. Interview with Carlo and Rafe (16.6 MB; MP3)

I’m going to be listening to these over breakfast and will definitely update this post later on today.

If I ever get to meet you Phil, I think you’ll butcher "Constantinescu" a lot more times than "Longino."

UPDATE: As promised, here are some notes I took while listening.

My interest in a podcast increases depending on who the speakers are OR the number of speakers joining the conversation. With that in mind I recommend you listen to all of them, but if you can only choose one … listen to the episode with Carlo and Rafe.

Podcast with Jay:

3GSM this year is bigger and better than last year’s.
Windows Mobile 6 is slick.
E65 is the "dark horse of the range"
Putting your phone on mute via a hard key is great.
Don’t like the keyboard of the E90.
The picture from DVB-H is beautiful.
TV on your phone will be a big thing.
E61i compliments the E61, for people who might and might not want a camera.
6110 Navigator is impressive, very nice piece of equipment, very fast; maps are usable and high quality.
Leaked pictures are good for the company. It’s the hardcore people who want to know about future models.
S60 is the most logical of all the smart phone operating systems.
"I have a negative opinion on the iPhone"
Phil: "I’m glad the iPhone is entering the market, it makes smart phones more mainstream."
Phil: "We welcome competition."

Podcast with Martin:

Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) phones are very nice. Extremely slim.
HSDPA was everywhere, everyone has a 3G phone.
WiMAX isn’t quite here yet, but it definitely had a presence at the show.
I loved the N95, downloadable maps are wicked.
The E90 is fantastic.
S60v3FP2, two things stand out for me: slicker UI thanks to the animations, new memory paging feature works great.
"Please put more memory in your phones"
"I would like more stability out of S60, there are glitches every now and then"
<lots of talk about Martin’s book: "Communication Systems for the Mobile Information Society">

Podcast with Carlo and Rafe:

Rafe: 3GSM has been awesome, Barcelona is great.
Carlo: 3GSM is bigger than previous years before. Less hype more substance.
Rafe: Things that stood out for me outside of S60 is the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Z8.
Carlo: I agree with Rafe, the Z8 is fantastic.
Carlo: Assuming the Z8 comes out in the US then it’s going to attract a lot of attention and make people more aware of Symbian.
Rafe: American consumers traditionally consider smart phones something for enterprise. The Z8 is good for Symbian.
Rafe: "In my opinion the iPhone is all about marketing."
Carlo: "I don’t get the impression that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) wants to make a lot of friends in this business."
Phil: "Do you think people will get more in to smart phones because of the iPhone?"
Carlo: Sure, from an American perspective this will push smart phones in to the mainstream.
Rafe: I agree, it’s good Apple is focusing on the user experience. It will make a positive impact on the smart phone industry.
Carlo: The interface on the LG Prada phone is a sandbox of new ideas.
Rafe: Touch screen will be growing in importance over the coming years.
Phil: What do you think about S60 and touch screen?
Carlo: I’m not a touch screen fan. I like clearly labeled menus and pushing a button.
Rafe: I feel as a secondary input mechanism it’s great. S60 feels incomplete without it. "I’m sure it’s just a matter of time."
Rafe: "I’ve got some what mixed feelings about the E90." I like the E61/E1i more. S60 isn’t suited for the E90, I will miss S80. The PIM on S80 was better. On the upbeat: "it’s a staggering piece of technology." "Mind blowing"
Carlo: I’m glad the E61i brings a camera to the E61. I too prefer the E61i compared to the E90. The specs of the E90 are impressive, no doubt about it, but I don’t think it will be as popular.
Rafe: The E61i changes "are spot on." "I’m really impressed with the E61i." "Shame it doesn’t have GPS and not using FP1."
Phil: E65 thoughts?
Carlo: I love the E65
Rafe: Not a traditional smart phone, but it will probably do the best out of all the E series devices released at 3GSM.
Carlo: Personally I just like reading email on my mobile. No need for a QWERTY.
Phil: N77, any thoughts?
Carlo: Not a lot of people are going to see this device.
Rafe: DVB-H just doesn’t have the market penetration.
Carlo: One of the most usable DVB-H devices. Feels very first generation.
Rafe: Compared to the N92 it’s a much better experience.
Phil: Is it better to spread out phone launches? Or release a bunch at once?
Carlo: I like the bunch of phones at once.
Rafe: I too like the 5 at once release at 3GSM.
Carlo: I think the 6110 is a very interesting device.
Rafe: I can see the personal gps device market shrinking. The dedicated key  on the 6110 is great.
Phil: How do you like the direction of S60?
Carlo: I like the "small team, company within a company feel" S60 has. One thing that doesn’t get a lot of attention is how operators are adopting S60.
Rafe: Very nice that S60 is taking the first step and talking to operators. S60’s largest hurdle is segmentation.

  1. Phil says:

Wow! A transcript, that’s sweet. I hope you enjoyed the interviews! And yeah, Carlo & Rafe are really sharp guys, I could listen to them all day.

  2. Jay3gsm says:

I’ve been talking to a colleague in the office, he’s really eager to get the iPhone. It’s always possible I was too harsh in my dismissal of the iPhone without having actually used one. I’m prepared to retract my comments if I’m proved wrong, but I have a gut feeling about this. I remain sceptic until I am convinced otherwise.
