Nokia N93i vs 6630: The progress we have accomplished with camera phones

James compares the seemingly ancient 6630 with his brand spanking new N93i.
Are we even surprised by these results? I’m going to have to agree with him: I simply can’t wait to see what the future brings!

How about a 6 Megapixel point and shoot camera made by Casio that is 16 mm thick. Check out the quality of an image it produced:
16 mm thick! Just to give you an idea how that number compares: Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s best camera phone, the N73 is 19 mm thick.
Would you be willing to sacrifice having a slim phone in order to have a higher quality camera?
I would in a heart beat.
The problem is of course that, IMO, a cam only digi cam is a VERY simple machine if one compares it with a amazingly complex, multitasking 3G phone.. yet camera makers require about the same space/size to make a decent one.
personally i’ll never use 16 mm thick dig. camera or phone and i would sacrifice having the slim phone
but i still don’t think that is possible to put optics as good as they are in dig. cams. in phone. When it comes to optics, it’s all about how big is something.
hm.. maybe (for beginning) use of CCD sensors instead of CMOS.
It seems pretty obvious that camera phones will always be one step behind dedicated cameras. But that’s like saying that personal computers will always be one step behind Pixar’s rendar farm! It’s horses for courses, as will say here in the UK.
Please excuse my spelling . . . that was ‘render’, not ‘rendar’! And ‘we say’, not ‘will say’!! What an idiot I am sometimes!
I just wish Nokia and Canon engineers would get together in a room and pop out something absolutely amazing.
