Some highlights:

Michelle and I had the chance to see Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s new 6110 Navigator in action during our last day at 3GSM last week. Nokia took us out in a new Nissan Qashqai that was equipped with a windshield mounted 6110 and took us on a brief tour of Barcelona. They also provided us with a 6110 that we could play with during the trip so that we could see how the user interface worked and such.

My first impression of the navigation software was that it was a bit awkward to use. There simply seemed to be a few more steps required and things that had to be set correctly before we could get on our way that I thought reasonable. Nokia had the 6110s pre-programmed with a number of pre-defined routes, complete with multiple waypoints, that we could choose from. But even so, the process seemed a bit awkward, making me wonder how it would have been if I had wanted to enter my own destination address – something I didn’t try.

Due to its lack of a large touch screen, the 6110 will probably never be as easy to use as a dedicated GPS navigation system. But since most everybody today has a mobile phone, being able to get full featured navigation from a phone that you already own instead of having to pay upwards of US$1000 for a dedicated car navigation device is sure to win some converts over to Nokia’s way of looking at things. I find that Nokia’s navigation software is at least as good as, if not better than, most other phone based navigation systems I have used, and yet, it is still an amazingly good mobile phone. Even if the 6110 had no GPS support, it would still be a winner. The GPS just makes it more of a winner. We look forward to doing a proper review on it when it becomes available later this year.

One of the things that annoys me to no end, is when an application asks EVERY SINGLE TIME (ggrr..) whether is ok to establish a data connection etc. etc. Free idea to Nokia: include an option “Do not ask me again”. I realise there might be concerns that kids and other mentally challenged folks will run up thousands in cell phone bills, but not everybody should suffer just because of that.
