The Nokia N93i will not ship with auto focus video recording

By Stefan Constantinescu on Thursday, February 22nd, 2007 at 1:08 PM PST In Devices, Ideas and rants

I just got an email from the team who sent me the N93i:

"We have been informed by Nseries that the actual N93i that will hit the stores will not have the auto-focus feature that is currently present on the device you are trialling."

That’s highly disappointing.

Baby
I don’t understand why it can’t be left in as an option. Auto focus was turned off by default on my N93i. I had to go in to the settings menu to enable that function as well as image stabilization.

Is it because of the mechanical noise? I’d like to speak with the N series team about this.

What do the other N93i testers think? James? Steve? Alex?

That one feature is what put the N93i leaps and bounds above the N93. Sure there is the faster focus time when snapping stills but … the N93i is all about video!

  1. Oh dear . . . well that is a real shame actually, perhaps it has long term implications for the lens motor or something like that. Personally, I trust these guys to do the right thing, but I will mourn it’s passing. :0(

hmmm…this isnt very good news! i hope that someone will try to hack the softwere if they dont include this! if they do take the autofocus out what would be the diffrence between the n93 and n93i? besides looks, and size.

  3. the autofocus speed of the N93i is SO MUCH BETTER than the N93 that it doesn’t even compare when taking still images.

so, that’s why my n93i dont have the cont. vid. af. i’ve look everywhere in manual for it…why…?

the biggest selling point of the N93i & its not part of the final product? i would like to know whether its something tht will be re-introduced in a later firmware or is it a hardware thing? i agree with james, it must be affecting the lens or something in the long run but as loyal fans & customers, i would like an answer from nokia…….. suddenly just the physical change of the N93i doesnt seem so worthwhile over the N93

Hi Stephan, if you could talk to the Nokia team I would very much like you to ask them if they could include a feature (in upcoming firmwares) that would enable the user to press a button for adjusting the auto-focus when needed.

I suggest that you testers give a loud feedback to Nokia about leaving this feature in, if only as an option not as default. stuff like this happens because they don’t hear people saying how cool the feature is so they decide it may not be needed. instead of just posting here about it, send your opinions to them too……as testers, you are entitled to. kick up a stink, make a noise!!

I’ve been one of the commenter’s to bitch about the motor noise that comes from auto focus, however NOT giving the end user the auto focus option feel even worse.

The simply option of having it disabled by default seems the easiest way to evade the problem. The high end tech user will KNOW what it means and find the option in the menu.

Let’s be honest here, even if this would affect the lens… Don’t we all replace phones within a 12 to 18 month cycle anyway?

I’m easily able to edit footage and add a ’soundtrack’ or something to cover the motor sound, but out of focus footage isn’t fixable.

Please Nokia, give us (your consumers that care enough about the products & read ALL the blogs and provide feedback) the choice.

    Thanks,
    Joffrey
