"Why does America have to be different?" -- well, for one, because many regions in the world have different start and end dates for daylight savings depending on latitude and local custom. Europe changed in 1996, and Iceland still doesn't observe it, and Russia is a bit different still. Japan and China tried it and then stopped and are both considering it again... The reason for the change in the US (and everywhere else) is to save energy.
