Awesome! I regret not bringing headphones with me today. I should be home in less than 2 hours anyway.

OR Download it directly (49 MB MP4 file)

I hate real player, but it is the only program the public terminals at school have that can play MP4 files. Why am I not using my laptop? Because my tuition goes towards 20 inch wide screen monitors and an internet connection fast enough to make a grown geek cry.

Nokia and WaveMarket Sign OEM Agreement to Deliver Location Based Services Worldwide

PR News Wire:

Nokia (NYSE: NOK), a world leader in mobile communications, and WaveMarket, a pioneer in location- based services, have entered into collaboration to offer location-based tracking services to carriers worldwide.

This OEM and reseller agreement will bring WaveMarket’s entire product suite to Nokia customers across the globe. WaveMarket has developed best-of- breed applications for both businesses and consumers, including family safety, pet tracking, enterprise tracking, mobile location dating, mobile locations searches and StreetHive — a friend-finding and social networking application.

Nokia will also integrate WaveMarket’s patented WaveAlert technology into its iGMLC network infrastructure. The first Nokia LBS application based on WaveMarket’s technology is Nokia LBS Push, launched at the 3GSM World Congress.

WaveMarket’s WaveAlert is the only platform offering active, as opposed to passive, alerting for increased location accuracy. For the first time, users can be notified when they are near something important to them, like a good friend who happens to be in their neighborhood, and carriers have a platform that solves the tremendous technical challenges required for alerting services. With patented algorithms that predict the location of all tracked assets in the network in real time, WaveAlert improves the performance of alerting applications by actively requesting location information from the user’s handset. In addition to dramatically reducing location polling rates and solving the problems associated with launching alert-based LBS, WaveAlert also reduces network costs.

"We are eager to integrate WaveMarket’s product suite into our infrastructure," said Heikki Hemmi, Director Location Business Nokia Networks. "As location-based services gain momentum in the mobile device community, Nokia is dedicated to providing an innovative variety of tracking and location solutions for each demographic market. We believe this feature-rich suite of location-based applications will appeal to a wide range of consumers."

"Collaboration with Nokia will leverage and expand WaveMarket’s current global presence," said Tasso Roumeliotis, CEO of WaveMarket. "We are pleased to be working with an industry leader such as Nokia. With this agreement Nokia will be able to provide its system customers with our quality location-based services for both business and consumers."

Location based services will have a huge, massive, we can’t even predict how big, effect on our industry.

Keep your eyes open. Things are going to get interesting.

Russian version of Mobile Review’s Nokia 6110 Navigator review is up

I’ll link you guys to the English version whenever it gets uploaded. We have to wait on the translation.

Pictures however speak a 1000 words.

My favorite shot:

Pic07

It is much smaller than I anticipated. Comparable to the E65.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: The 6110 was the most under appreciated device Nokia (NYSE: NOK) released at 3GSM.

The LED on the Nokia E61i won’t be useless!

In Devices, Ideas and rants

Ed from E-Series just got his hands on quite a number of screen shots from the E61i. I suggest you check all of them out. This one in particular caught my eye:

Notificationlight0011

I’ve had many mobile phones in my life time. My favorite one right now is definitely my Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E61. Sure the vibration feature is weak and the LED notification only works for email, but it is will always have a place in my heart.

Nokia seems to have fixed at least one of my gripes with the addition of this menu. You can now be notified of missed calls and text messages. Absolutely glorious.

Would it be too much to ask that the next firmware update for the E61 we can somehow get this functionality?

For those of you who want a Nokia E61i don’t forget to sign up for notification of availability.

I just noticed this today: go to Nokia’s press site and your browser detects a feed!

Rssicon32x32My main complaint: The feed doesn’t give you the whole press release. Why? I’ll stick to my email subscription but I will give Nokia (NYSE: NOK) the benefit of the doubt and say thank you to the marketing relations people.

If you want to be highly illegal you could always open up a blogger account, enable blogging by email, subscribe to the Nokia Press Releases via email and have it sent to that blogger account. Now you have full Nokia Press Releases via RSS!

Nokia and Qualcomm trial postponed

By Stefan Constantinescu on Tuesday, February 27th, 2007 at 9:22 AM PST
In Financial/Corporate News

Nokia PR:

Tysonhome
Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced today that the Administrative Law Judge overseeing the investigation initiated by Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) against Nokia in the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) has ordered a stay of the proceedings until further notice.  The trial had been scheduled to begin on March 5, 2007.

On June 9, 2006 Qualcomm filed a complaint with the ITC requesting an investigation into the alleged infringement by Nokia’s GSM products of six Qualcomm patents.  The ITC subsequently initiated an investigation on July 10, 2006.

Nokia is confident that it has not infringed any Qualcomm patents that are at issue in this investigation.  Additionally, since Qualcomm filed its complaint, it has voluntarily withdrawn three of the six patents from the suit.  The remaining three are all from the same patent family. Nokia believes the patent withdrawal reflects on the weakness of Qualcomm’s case.

If the case is not dismissed before the stay is lifted Nokia welcomes the opportunity to prove that the claims regarding the three remaining patents have no more merit than those Qualcomm has already voluntarily withdrawn.

I shouldn’t blog at 7:15 in the morning. I totally misread the press release.

The court date was set for March 5th, but it has now been delayed. No one knows when the trial will resume.

Acceleration sensor usage concepts

By Dusan Belic on Tuesday, February 27th, 2007 at 8:21 AM PST
In Nokia, Technologies

Over at Forum Nokia (NYSE: NOK) Blogs, Andreas Jakl, presented some interesting new concepts for the acceleration sensor which comes built-in with the Nokia 5500 Sport and Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s iPhone.

carMeterThe article goes through two examples. The first one deals with snowboarding, where the application (gBoarder) monitors the movements of the boarder and provides some stats to the boarder like the number of crashes you’ve had or your longest jump.

The second application (carMeter) measures car’s acceleration and displays the g-force in real time on the display. This is a brand new idea that should make driving a car more interesting.
