In Devices, General, Nokia

SymbianGuru spotted fascinating video of the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) 888 wearable concept phone in action. It’s touch based, light, flexible, smart, easy to use, location sensitive, it has superior graphics and animation, and… it seems too far away. Ten years at least, as far as I see. But who knows, things can change rapidly…

It seems that something interesting is cooking-up in the research centers of the Japanese-Swedish company. Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) filled a hard-to-miss patent for the mobile phone docking station, which should sport the full QWERTY keyboard, additional screen and the speakers. Is this a dream coming true? A device which you can have with you all the time and then just dock it home and use it as a regular computer? We’ll watch this space carefully and keep you posted. By Stefan Constantinescu on Friday, February 2nd, 2007 at 4:15 PM PST
In Gaming, Nokia

NGageNokia (NYSE: NOK)’s Next-Gen gaming platform is coming and there’s nothing new about it. However, thanks to the PocketGamer, we know that Nokia held a secret workshop for the small group of American and Asian publishers. Of course, the small group is also THE group, and includes such companies like Disney, EA, Sega, THQ, Namco, Capcom and some small smaller mobile gaming companies (Glu Mobile, Digital Chocolate, etc). Furthermore, the article reveals that the Finish giant is preparing the similar event for in Madrid for European developers.

It’s good to know that things are moving. It’s just, we would like to know more and from the official sources if possible.

Nokia spending 10 million euros to expand Hungarian plant

By Stefan Constantinescu on Friday, February 2nd, 2007 at 1:12 PM PST
In Financial/Corporate News

Leading communications technology firm Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has announced on Friday that it will further expand its Komárom plant (northwest Hungary), investing EUR 10 million in the project.

Construction of the new building, in which Nokia will deal with delivery-related tasks, will be launched soon, Nokia said in a statement. The new facility will sprawl on 10,000 sqm and is to be complted by August this year.

Mobile phone production kicked off in the Komárom plant seven years ago and the factory produced its 300 millionth handset (a Nokia 2310) at the end of 2006.

“The new investment indicates that Nokia remains committed to Hungary and the Komárom plant," said Timo Kahelin, chief executive of Nokia Komárom Kft.

In January 2004, Nokia decided to expand the Komárom unit and pumped more than EUR 50 million into it, widening the production area to over 50,000 square metres.

The factory currently operates with a staff of some 4,000 people, but Nokia said it would recruit additional workers.

Expansion = more handsets being made = more handsets being sold.

Nice.

Symbian’s 3GSM blog is up, where is Nokia’s?

By Stefan Constantinescu on Friday, February 2nd, 2007 at 12:39 PM PST
In Ideas and rants

Symbian, the foundation of S60, has just opened up their 3GSM blog. Check it out, I’ve definitely subscribed.

Via: All About Symbian

3gsm Symbians 3GSM blog is up, where is Nokias?

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) on the other hand … they have this little flash site that doesn’t really give us any meaningful information.

It’s been static for about 10 days now, nothing has changed since when I first blogged about it:

Nokia employees speaking at the event:

  • Dr. Tero Ojanperä: Technology Symposium Session: Defining the Next Technological Evolution
  • Harri Männistö: Mobile TV Panel
  • Mary McDowell: Name of session to come
  • Simon Beresford-Wylie: Name of session to come

The live webcast will be February 12th between 11:00 and 12:00 CET
(+1) time. 5 AM in NYC, 2 AM in California, 4 AM for me in Texas.

I really miss the Nokia World style blogging. What happened? The N series blog at CES was a joke, and now there won’t even be a blog for what is essentially the most important wireless exhibition that will happen this year!

UPDATE: After looking at Nokia’s 3GSM website more closely I have found some new information. Gerhard Romen, the head of NFC Market Development at Nokia will be giving a presentation about NFC. Simon Beresford-Wylie’s session has been given a name: "Redefining Vendors for Future Success"
