2006 smartphone sales

By Dusan Belic on Monday, March 5th, 2007 at 6:41 AM PST In Research

With over 80 million smartphones shipped worldwide, last year was the year of the converged devices. Despite its problems in North America, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) took a major slice of that market. So, it’s not surprising to see Nokia’s commitment to Symbian S60-based devices. Especially, when you consider that these kind of handsets usually bring higher margins.

Highlights:

  • According to IDC, overall sales rose by 42% bolstered by falling prices
  • Nokia shipped 38 million smartphones, a 48% of all sales
  • With 6 millions shipped BlackBerries, RIM cornered 7.5% of the marketshare
  • Thanks to its popular Q model, Motorola (NYSE: MOT) grabbed the third position with 4.9 million devices shipped
