This is a common dilemma in tech development: integrated technology solutions (such as S40) provide better performance, but open horizontal technology platforms (such as S60) provide better flexibility etc. As the technology advances, the benefits in flexibility etc. will eventually outweigh the benefits in extra performance. When that happens exactly, depends on the preferences of the user.
