Samsung announces world’s smallest 8.4 MP CMOS image sensor

If it’s not TI, it’s Samsung that brings us some neat technology. This time they’ve announced an 8.4 MP CMOS image sensor (CIS) with a 1.4 pixel design. The new chip comes with a high signal to noise ratio (SNR), a key measure of overall image quality.
The high-res is achieved by implementing advanced light sensing features and minimized noise levels. Plus, there’s an extended photo diode technology to achieve higher light sensitivity and saturation levels, resulting in an enhanced fill factor.
Apparently, Samsung’s new CMOS image sensor will provide the same image quality as the charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors currently used in most digital cameras. Additionally, the new CIS uses only one tenth the power of a CCD image sensor, and my guess is that we could expect to see it coming in the camera phones by year’s end. (via: FarEastGizmos)
