Dear Nokia: Today I begin my new job

I know what you guys are thinking, isn’t it my dream to work for Nokia?

Absolutely! I’ve applied for nearly every single entry level position and internship I could find in both America and Finland.

If there are any Nokia Managers reading this then please contact me.

I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep well at night knowing that I just spent 8 hours trying to sell Samsung and Pantech devices. ~~The sooner I can stop working here, the better.~~ I prefer Nokia devices, obviously, but I’m going to do my best to familiarize myself with Helio’s line up and services.

Update: Immature post? Yes I admit I did cross the line. Would I want to talk to the higher ups at Helio? Yes, I have plenty of ideas about how they can improve.

Perhaps you can convince Helio to start using some Nokia phones? And on a more realistic note, I guess getting experience with Samsung etc. phones will make you even better at pointing out areas for improving Nokias! Good luck, have fun.

Ummm Stefan? Let me share a little bit of career advice if I might. Your passion is clear to all and your hopes and ambitions may come to pass but this might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen you post.

Never burn a bridge – especially while you’re still walking across it.

Do your job with all of the energy and passion you so obviously can muster when you choose to. Helio is a cool company trying to do something decidedly different by focusing on the blend of services and hardware in a way none of the big carriers have. That’s something to be excited about. Become THE Helio expert and evangelize what you think is working and objectively criticize what is not.

Let me leave you with a question to ponder. Why would I, as a Nokia manager looking to hire new talent onto my team, want to bring someone on board who’s already talking about leaving on their first day of work in such a public fashion? Ambition is a desirable quality in an employee. But ambition that is not tempered by dedication to your current commitments and loyalty to those who have made a place for you is not a good recipe for advancement.

I have to echo the comments of Tommi on this one. You post was ill thought out, and incredibly immature. A salesman came to see me for a job, brought not only himself, but details of all the deals he had done in past 12 months. He didnt get the job, in fact i was furious with him for thinking that i would be impressed with his disloyalty. Loyalty and trust are commodities very hard to build up, and easy to lose. I recommended to you, get close to the product management team, demonstrate your abilities as an effective communicator (listening and speaking), you can always speak to much, but never listen enough.

Marc: Thanks for the advice. I’ve come to the realization that I did cross the line. I won’t make this mistake again.

Tommi: They never read my blog. My boss hates when me and my coworker take our phones out of our pockets. I use the Nokia E61 and my friend has a Blackjack.

Stefan, I have to support what Tommi and others have said. You have to commit to the best today you can deliver. You seem pretty unhappy with your choice, but this approach won’t serve you well at all. And I can pretty much assure you ever hiring manager I know would find it. I Google everyone’s names before interviews and learn what I can. Your name pulls Ring Nokia as the first hit as I’d expect.

Those who know you know your passion, but for those who don’t, you hurt your reputation. I’d encourage you to take the high road on whatever path you choose and not burn a bridge without fully understanding the impact your particular choice of incendiary device might have.

I’m still pulling for you, but gotta push toward doing it the right way.
