Korea to subsidy cell phone buyers

By Dusan Belic on Thursday, April 5th, 2007 at 11:06 AM PST In General

Like it’s not enough that they already have some cool exclusive handsets in the country, Korean government wants to subsidies cell phone buyers through nation’s three carriers.

The new plan will allow telcos to provide users with up to $400 discounts, thus allowing more users to get a (second?) mobile phone. At present there are about 40 million mobile phone users in the country of 50 million people.

Previously, handset subsidies were outlawed in Korea (since March 2003) to cutthroat competition among carriers, which had provided mobile phones at giveaway prices. (via: SlashPhone)
