Tip: Turn off UMTS if you know you’re not going to use it

By Stefan Constantinescu on Monday, April 9th, 2007 at 11:43 AM PST In Random

PhoneBoy provides us a tip about something I’ve been doing since day 1 of owning my Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E61.

Hit the Application Key on your Nseries [any S60 device really] phone and go to Tools > Settings > Network > Network Mode. Set it to GSM. You will be asked to reboot the phone for this change to take effect. Once the reboot occurs, the phone won’t try and use UMTS at all.

No sense in leaving it on if it does nothing but suck power! The same thing can be said about Bluetooth, turn it on only when you need it.

Thanks for the tip, I also saw a tip to limit the wifi power level.
Turn down Tx Power Level (Tools > Settings > Connection > Wireless LAN > Options > Advanced Settings > TX Power Level) you have to get out of the auto enabled option for this to work.
I just did it, they say it offers days more battery time and still works well with wifi.
