Broadcom Sues Qualcomm Over Patent And Licensing Mis-steps

Broadcom sues Qualcomm for unfair standards practicesQualcomm sure is getting cozy with the US legal system these days. Broadcom (NSDQ: BRCM) filed suit against Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) in an Orange County Superior Court on April 12. Broadcom is crying foul on Qualcomm for not playing fair in front of an international standards commission. It seems that Qualcomm may have “hidden” some of its patent holdings from the H.264 standards committee. The suit also mentions that Qualcomm was barred by the IEEE from working with the 802.20 communications standard group for allegedly “stuffing” the group.

Among the accusations of fraud and breach of contract, Qualcomm may also have violated California regulations governing fair competition. It really doesn’t seem fair for a company involved in telecommunications to have more than a “working relationship” with any standards body that’s working to determine future communications standards.
