Purchased you N95 from an operator? Flash it!

When you’ve got someone like Andy Abramson telling you that it’s your right to use the VoIP stack in your N95, you simply have to stand up and applaud.
Lesson learned: Do not buy branded phones. I can’t stress this enough.
In a perfect world operators would sell access to their network and people would purchase their phones directly from Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Pantech, Samsung, Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE), LG, etc.

it doesnt take a brain surgeon or an andy abramson who just talks about his “clients” to know that buying a branded phone will give you a stripped down version of whatever the carrier wants you to have..nokia e61 vs e62.. but theres a few things I tell my friends when they ask me what phone they should buy..remember a few things
-support – unlocked phones arent supported by the carrier..who you gona call? ghostbusters! if you arent a techie good luck with any issues
-insurance: carrying this $400 phone in my pocket is nice and all until it gets stolen, lost, broken.. no US carrier will insure it
-settings and access: if you arent a techie you are going to have a hell of a time putting all those cool features like the SIP client to work.. buy a carrier branded phone walk out of the store 100% up and running..as far as access until recently i was able to view the cingular videos even though my e61’s 3Gless here.. now its blocked.

And, you do get the phone cheaper (assuming you still need to use the same service plan with the unblocked phone anyway) if you are willing to put up with the possible limitations on its use.
