Sun Acquires SavaJe’s Intellectual Property - Open Source Java-based OS To Follow?

SavaJe Technologies Inc., rushed onto the scene about three years ago with bold statements about its Java-based mobile operating system. Sun Microsystems (NSDQ: JAVA) just bought the rights to all of SavaJe’s intellectual property, including the rights to SavaJe’s java-based mobile OS. We don’t really know what Sun plans to do with their SavaJe IP acquisition, but Sun has hinted that it will provide more details at its JavaOne conference in San Fransisco. So we’ll have more info come May 8-11. First Linux, now Java, what’s next?

SavaJe and its java-based mobile operating system acquired by Sun Microsystem

The company boldly claimed that their open-source operating system, touting a flexible user interface, was poised to be picked up by mobile phone manufacturers and operators. But they only managed to sign LG Electronics and a few small Asian ODM’s. And recently, there have been rumors flying around that the company has since spent all their venture capital cash, prompting European execs to jump ship. What does all this mean for the future of a Java-based mobile OS? Who knows, but you can bet Sun didn’t pony up the dough without any intention to put it to good use.

Just when we thought that we would have three major players in the mobile OS arena, here comes another Java-based contender. Lookout Linux, you got another open-source rival gunning for your 2012 market share!
