With cell phone market penetration growing ever larger, the potential for cell phone based scams is greater than ever. “The Real Hustle” team reveals the “Text Message Trap.” Beware of strangers asking you to use your cell phone to send out a quick text message. You may end up with an expensive subscription to a pay-per-text service you never even heard of. Here’s how it works (video after the break):
- The stranger asks you to use your cell phone for a text message because their own phone is out of batteries, or something along those lines.
- They distract you as they text a subscription service to sign up your mobile number for the pay-service.
- You will be charged hundreds of dollars for every text message that you receive from this premium service – like $250 for each joke that you receive as a text – ending up with huge yearly expenses for a service that is almost impossible to cancel.
If you’re compelled to let that pretty lady use your cell phone, make sure you know what and whom they are texting.
