text messaging is making kids stupiderRueters is reporting that, according to a new study from Irish State Examination Commission, 15-year olds are getting stupid from all the text messaging they do. When it comes to the English language, the text messaging craze (especially prominent among teens) seems to promote “simple tenses and a limited vocabulary.” The problem is that “Text messaging, with its use of phonetic spelling and little or no punctuation, seems to pose a threat to traditional conventions in writing.” And, “the emergence of the mobile phone and the rise of text messaging as a popular means of communication would appear to have impacted on standards of writing as evidenced in the responses of candidates.”
