Microsoft goes for 20 million Windows Mobile licenses next year

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) wants to see its mobile OS licenses double in 2008, reaching 20 million handsets. Speaking to Dow Jones Newswires, Microsoft’s Senior Vice President for Mobile Communications Pieter Knook said Microsoft is gaining market share in the mobile phone software market and expects that with the advancements of handset market, computer applications and Internet services become more important for both enterprise users and consumers.

Windows MobileAccording to Knook, Microsoft is stealing the market share from RIM and Symbian, and expects that beside HTC who makes a majority of Windows Mobile smartphones, other handset makers jump in. Mr Knook stated that the Redmond-based giant is planning an expansion on the 40 other handset manufacturers, and that they are hoping to see Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and Samsung becoming more significant users of the Microsoft’s technology.
