HTC buys their own mobile phone certification company – Speedy handset certification to follow

HTC acquire CGC (Communications Global Certification) for easier certification of mobile phonesIn a move that makes so much sense it’s a wonder why they didn’t do this sooner, HTC has acquired Communication Global Certification (CGC). The one (perhaps only) aspect of handset manufacturing that most manufacturers have no control over is the certification process. This process ensures that the handset will work on a particular network standard (GSM, GPRS, EDGE), with no baubles or hiccups. Certification can delay the launch of a mobile phone, but HTC’s purchase of CGC, for NT$280 million, is intended to give HTC an advantage by reducing the time it takes to get their devices to market. HTC’s COO, Fred Liu, will take head the newly acquired subsidiary.

This acquisition will likely give HTC a one-two punch, in terms of market advantage. They will have more control over the vertification process and timeline – helping to rush their handsets to market. HTC will also benefit from a close relationship with the certification company – giving them an inside line on how to tweak the hardware and software for the best performance.
