Soren Petersen: Cell phone industry to sell 4 Billion handsets by 2010

By Stefan Constantinescu on Wednesday, May 9th, 2007 at 12:33 AM PST In Financial/Corporate News

Is this a typo?

"We
shipped one million mobile handsets globally last year and we expect this number
to touch four billion by 2010." – Nokia (NYSE: NOK) Senior Vice President, Entry Business Unit, Soren Petersen

The Inquirer proves it is a typo:

1.02 billion cell phone units were sold in 2006 with unit growth of between 10-15 per cent expected in 2007.

Quadruple in less than 4 years? Who wants to take bets?

I simply do not think this is going to happen.

I seriously suspect the “journalist” did not know what the hell he/she is writing about. What I think Mr. Petersen ment was that the global number of phones in use would hit 4 billion by 2010 (not units sold in a year).
