Press Release Catch Up Day

By Stefan Constantinescu on Saturday, May 12th, 2007 at 4:11 PM PST In Financial/Corporate News

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has been pretty busy these past few weeks. Ordinarily I would link to their press releases the same day they get released, but a few things have been happening recently in my personal life that I don’t want to share, yet. Let me just say that I’m excited and the future of this blog is looking pretty bright right about now. Will share more details once they have solidified.

Here are a few press releases that I didn’t cover for one reason or another, but I’m bringing them to you right now. In reverse chronological order, let us dive right in:

May 11, 2007:

Nokia sold 2.5 Billion US Dollars worth of phones to a company called China Postel.

Is that shipped or an extra few million dollars?

May 10, 2007:

The Nokia 1200, 1208 and 1650 will be the first phones that push Nokia’s effort to reduce power usage. These devices will tell you to unplug them from the wall charger in order to save power.

In a world of automation this is the wrong solution to a large problem. Why not make power adapters that are smart enough to shut themselves down once a phone is completely recharged?

May 09, 2007:

Nokia and the Tampere University of Technology will be working more closely together and will launch the first "Nokia Innovation Centre" where some of the brightest minds in Finland will be working together.

I’m glad to see this happening. Anyone can create information, that is easy, sharing and discovering it however is the challenge that we face today. Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s search algorithms are what put it on the map, Microsoft’s MSDN network and Sun’s blogs are excellent examples of companies pushing interoffice communication in a new way. We know Nokia is using blogs and wiki’s internally, this press release is just stating that similar infrastructure needs to be setup in the world of research.

Project N95 is a Nokia sponsored road trip. Peter Schindler will be driving 20,000+ kilometers across China and recording his experiance with a Nokia N95.

Hope they gave him a car charger! This is not solely a PR event, he is raising money for the China Youth Development Foundation and anything to increase the quality of the lives of children is great in my book.

Breaking News: Giving employees mobile devices improves their efficiency!

May 03, 2007:

Nokia executives got together at the Annual General Meeting and played musical chairs while deciding how much stock to buy back and what the dividends should be for Nokia stock holders.

Several companies, including Nokia, got together to announce that they have figured out how to squeeze over 100 Mbps out of a new standard called: "Long Term Evolution / System Architecture Evolution" (LTE/SAE)

They think this stuff will launch in 2009/2010, which should give me enough time to figure out what the hell we can use all the bandwidth for. The obvious answer is there is no such thing as enough bandwidth.

April 30, 2007:

Nokia launched two IP security devices. If you’re a network administrator of a medium size or large company you should check this out. One of these bad boys will set you back $30,000 in its stock configuration.

April 25, 2007:

Nokia teams up with a band called Travis to launch the N76. The device will sell itself, it is that sexy.

Nokia released Carbide.c++ 1.2

April 24, 2007:

N95 won a TIPA award for "Best Mobile Imaging Device in Europe 2007."

April 16, 2007:

Nokia N800 works with Orb MyCasting which lets you view the media on your home pc anywhere in the world, as long as you have a connection to the internet.

It is about time Nokia finally realized that this Internet Tablet can also be used as a Multimedia Tablet! If they give the next tablet GPS functionality that doesn’t take 5 minutes to lock on it will be a smashing success.

Nokia and Samsung are working together to make sure Mobile TV takes off.

I’m not done just yet, don’t forget about Nokia Siemens Networks:

May 09, 2007:

I already covered this, but I want to mention is again since it is important: NSN will have massive layoffs with around 10,000 people loosing their jobs by 2010, 1,500 of them in Finland.

May 08, 2007:

I can’t rephrase this, the techical writer in charge of this press release did a brilliant job:

"Following extensive technical evaluations, TeliaSonera has chosen Nokia Siemens Networks to deploy its IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). IMS is key to TeliaSonera’s plans to offer attractive IP-based services such as VoIP, video calling and instant messaging. Under the terms of the agreement, Nokia Siemens Networks will deploy a complete IMS solution."

More information on IMS since I never heard about it:

"Nokia Siemens Networks’ IMS is an open, standardized system for combining mobile and broadband services, making it possible for end users to seamlessly access the same services over mobile, fixed and WLAN networks.  For example, IMS will allow them to make calls, send messages, engage in instant messaging, and view videos and photos, regardless of how they access the network. Users can also have the same address book on their fixed phone, mobile and broadband terminals, and can see whether the person they want to contact is offline or busy."

May 03, 2007:

In 2008 Nokia will launch "Nokia Siemens Networks Village Connection" which makes rural access to cellular technology in the less well off countries around the world finally possible.
