Qualcomm Laying Claim to Future Wireless Broadband Communications Patents

Qualcomm is calling “dibs” on the next round of high-speed wireless data patents. By laying claim to “more than 1,000 essential patents for OFDM, OFDMA (OFDM Access), and MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technologies,” Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) is ensuring that, no matter what technologies are utilized in the next generation of wireless broadband, they’ll be rolling in royalties. However, WiMAX is left out of the picture in Qualcomm’s patents. Bill Davidson, Senior VP of investor relations and international marketing for Qualcomm, says that WiMAX is not a concern for the company because of the “engineering trade-offs and performance issues†associated with taking the technology from a fixed environment to the mobile market.
It looks like Qualcomm is setting the stage for future litigation over technology licensing. We all know how much they like to fight in court.
