S60 Networking Stack: A huge disorganized mess

By Stefan Constantinescu on Saturday, May 12th, 2007 at 5:39 PM PST In Ideas and rants

First it began with PhoneBoy ranting about how the access point experience is not the same across multiple Nokia (NYSE: NOK) devices.

Then he got his Nokia N95 and experienced random reboots and instability when it came to using the VoIP features.

Jonathan Greene was relieved to know that he wasn’t the only one having these issues.

Now Ricky Cadden is delightfully pissed off that there is only one application that behaves the way he wants to; S60 does not handle access point priorities well.

As for me, I can not use WiFi with Real Player on my Nokia E61. The issue is not present on my Nokia E61i.

This is what I miss about Palm (NSDQ: PALM): It was the same base OS no matter what device you purchased. Why would phones made N Series, E Series and Multimedia Phones Division yield different results?

Are they not working from the same S60 core?

VOIP over WLAN, Real Player streaming, and access point detection, connection and gestation work like a dream on the E61i.

    Pity, about the N95’s problems.

Makes you wonder which phone should have really had the tagline ‘It’s What Computers Have Become’ eh? :)

Not that I like that line, quite frankly I think its a bit presumptuous and totally overbearing, but last i remember, I didnt use my computer to navigate while driving, or take high quality pictures with it. I did however use my computer to write emails (with a QWERTY keyboard), use VOIP, taken average but very decent quality photos, surf the net on a wide screen, and connect to different access points without a hitch…

You get my point, of course.

I haven’t even started using VoIP features on the N95 yet.

  3. PPaFin says:

I still wonder, why N95 has no “connection groups” ? It’s great feature in E-series and allows you to configure email to use wlan & 3G group and automaticly prefer wlan, if it’s available.

I heard that E- and N-teams are ‘fighting’ over each others. Maybe that the reason ?

  4. Stan says:

How Nokia can call their phones as “network computer” if they didn’t include application like SymSMB 2.00 in every phone with Wi-Fi?
