Samsung develops world’s thinnest 2.2″ AM-OLED display

Again it’s Samsung who brings the new technologies to the mobile world. This time they’ve created the world’s thinnest (only 0.53 millimeters thick) 2.2″ active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) display. The new display promises to change the way phones and other devices with screens are built — it’s much lighter, brighter and more energy-efficient than current dominating LCD panels.

If everything goes well, the Korean company will start producing new displays within a few months. First customers are already on board, and include such companies as Korea’s Reigncom and Japan’s Kyocera (NYSE: KYO).
Still, new technology brings new kinds of problems. According to some sources, 40% of panels produced are good enough to be sold and the rest are dumped — meaning the production is still very expensive. Hopefully, we’ll see this problem solved in the near future… (via: fareastgizmos)
