Sony has the Cybershot brand, Motorola just signed a deal with Kodak, what exactly is Nokia bringing to the table?

Image tests are obviously subjective
, so when I say I prefer Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) K800i images to Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N95 pictures I’m probably going to start a flame war.

All that aside now, Sony has engineers that have experience in crafting digital cameras; Motorola (NYSE: MOT) just announced that they’re partnering with Kodak to produce a 5 megapixel camera phone. What is Nokia doing?

The "Carl Zeiss" moniker doesn’t carry as much weight as it used to and I for one am tired of this megapixel cock fight going on between mobile phone makers. How can Nokia make their camera phones better?

One of my 20 Nokia New Year’s Resolutions was to get a bunch of Canon (or Nikon) technicians to try and fit one of their CMOS sensors and image processors inside a "multimedia computer."

Canon’s smallest camera, the SD 1000 is 92 x 57 x 20 mm

The Nokia N95 is 99 x 53 x 21 mm

I’ll get the hotel room, who is going to buy the Barry White CD? I would love to see these two devices get it on and produce something that I can truthfully say makes stand alone cameras totally useless.

Who is going to be the first mobile phone maker to create a camera phone with image stabilization?

  1. I’ve been suggesting this for a while now, I think Nokia should partner with Canon.

  2. amen, i posted about this at the time, yes partner with canon!

I’ve been thinking about this before too. Although I think Canon would be the best choice (although I prefer Sony cameras much more), Nikon would be a good match. Nikon-Nokia =O Nk-Nk

    Nikon FTW!!!!
Nikon kicks Canon’s BUTT!!! (no offense Stefan for owning a powershot a10 :D )

That would be Sony Ericsson with the K800i already.

Believe it or not there is already a phone out there that has a 5MP Sony CMOS out there. It’s relatively cheap and the form factor is really nice. It seems to take amazing low light shots, but I haven’t had my hands on one to see for myself. The only thing suspect is the lack of 850 band and the custom OS. Here is a nice review: http://www.mobile-review.com/review/imobile-902-en.shtml and here tnkgrl mobile blogger takes a bunch of shots with one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tnkgrl/sets/72157594525826478/

geekonimu: mobile-review says it is a 5MP CCD sensor which is much more believable than a CMOS sensor. As far as I know the CMOS sensors are still waaaay too power-hungry for a cell phone.

And I would say Nokia/Carl Zeiss has a lot more weight than any partnership with Kodak. Kodak has long been the flea-bag of the digital photography world.

@jay_cee: you mean kaplanfx, not me. i said nothing about any 5mp cmos.

The problem is not getting an imageing sensor that can fit within the set space. The problem is getting one that will not require a monster battery AND getting a lens of high enough quality to make the sensor worth it..not to mention if you want it to work in the dark you need a faster lens, which means the aperature must be big enough to let light in to the sensor. if you want a professional quality camera in your phone you better to be ready to lug around a beast. If you look at the resolveing power of most camera phone (and small point and shoot cameras for that matter) its the quality of the lens that is holding back the good photo not the sensor.

Leica, nikon and zeiss (although zeiss’s name has been marred by its over use, but are normal fair on Hasselblads, the workhorse of the pro photo world) have the best optics. Canon’s suck in comparaison if you don’t agree go to anywhere useing optics for something besides photos (think microscopes) and look for canons…canon might make the copier next to the microscope though. If you want to have something other then 5mps of crap you need a better lens…’course those cost more…there is a reason why studios invest in cameras costing more then a 3 series bmw and not just using a point and shot from best buy.

the moral: we need lenses as good as the current sensors first–I can par a 3mp sensor with a good lens and get better photos then a 10 mp sensor with a crap lens…and if you don’t beleve me go get a pro slr and pro glass (you’ll have to back the image resolution down) and a 10 mp point and shoot and see which pics are sharper with a 400% enlargment (enlargment is why you want more pixels anyway…)
