Not so intelligent after all – Nissan I-Keys don’t like cellphones

By Dusan Belic on Saturday, May 26th, 2007 at 2:31 AM PST In Devices

Nissan I-KeysReuters reports that there’s a problem with Nissan’s intelligent car keys. According to Japanese automaker, the outgoing or incoming calls have the potential to alter the electronic code inside the I-Key. Naturally, Nissan is urging its customers to get new fixed keys from the local dealers. In the meantime, it is suggested that they put their cell phones and I-Keys at least an inch apart to avoid any problems.

Fortunately, this problem has occurred only in a “very small percentage” of models, but includes such vehicles as top selling Nissan Altima and Infiniti G35 sedans. What? The G35 has a problem. Please say it’s not true… :)

Do you folks realize that many of the “mechanical metal” keys these days are already electronic? Your passive anti-theft system relies on some kind of electronic signal or your car won’t start.

You can’t get these keys made at a hardware store like the APC – http://www.speedyperformanceparts.com/apc_p.html -, and the defect in the Nissan key could have just as easily been in one of these “old fashioned” keys.

Get with the times. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Many people love it. You usually don’t have the option to leave out the passive anti-theft system, so which is the bigger potential problem?
