88% of Serbians use mobile phones – Serbia mobile phone usage on the up and up!

By Will Park on Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 at 11:59 PM PST In Announcements, Research

Serbia has really been burning rubber when it comes to market penetration for mobile phone usage! In the past year, 1.8 million Serbians has started using mobile phones – amounting to a 22% increase over the previous year. As of May 2007, Serbia has reached mobile market penetration of 88% – quite an impressive number indeed!

We like to think that our resident Serbian editor, Dusan, has played a large part in his home country’s increased cell phone use. What better way to increase awareness and push mobile technologies than to see Dusan walking around, visiting various cafes and shops, using all those fancy mobile gadgets?

Serbian wireless market penetration reaches 88% - serbia has seen increasing mobile phone usage at a rapid pace

Wireless operator, Telekom Srbija, accounted for 71% of the increased wireless subscribers, with Mobtel picking up 29%. It’s interesting to note that, as of 2004, the two companies were essentially tied in subscriber-base, but Telekom Srbija has clearly taken the lead – which is quite expected given there are only two choices in this particular market.

However, Austria-based Telekom Austria is slated to get into the Serbian wireless market by the end of 2007. But, only after wireless market penetration is projected to break through the 100% mark.

Great work Dusan! It looks like all your wireless soldiering has paid off! Hats off to you.

  1. Marcvs Agrippa says:

On June 11 the third mobile operator / provider started offering their services in Serbia. The company’s called VIP Mobile and is a subsidiary of Austria’s Mobilkom.

This should bring down the cost-per-minute, given that Serbia is the second most expensive country in Europe when it comes to cell phones (Poland being the most expensive).

  2. Will Park says:

That’s a nice benefit to market competition – Dusan is always saying how wireless minutes, and especially data, rates are crazy out there!
