MiTAC Mio A702 – Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional smartphone with GPS

Remember the somewhat disappointing MiTAC Mio A701? Well, apparently MiTAC has learned some new tricks and is trying to redeem themselves with an their new Mio A702 GPS phone. First of all, the newest Mio A-series from MiTAC boasts Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional! On top of that, we get a 3.2 megapixel camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, and microSD slot – with a jog-wheel thrown in for good measure.
The MiTAC Mio A702 looks like a solidly built piece of kit – it’s slightly brick-ish, but bricks tend to be nice and sturdy. Still, all kidding aside, it’s pretty small for a phone that sports a 3.2 megapixel camera, WinMo6, and a SiRFDiRect GPS chipset built-in – especially if this thing ends up packin’ a quad-band GSM radio with HSDPA (hey, now that would be nice).

I’m liking the look of this phone. When the Mio a701 came out I was jumping at the chance to get one however once I actaully had one in my hand I was a bit disappointed. The main drawback for me was the lack of the numeric keypad but I think Mio have got it right with the Mio A702 so I’ll definitley be having a look once they become available.

Somewhat disapointing A701? Are you kidding me?! I have an A701 and this looks much better. I will definitely get one.
Does any one know if the mio A701 or better yet the a702 will work with Oracle Calendar (used by office I work for)? If not, any suggestions as to how to get this info?

Mechanical keypads are a thing of the past. A well designed digital GUI is the future. I want the display to be as big as possible (16:9 please). I hope the A702 will come without the keypad. I also hope Mio will put the PDA on a diet, and make it thinner.
I think Apple’s iPhone will eat the dust.

Having used a touchscreen phone for 18 months, I’m really looking forwards to going back to tactile numeric buttons (thankfully no fiddly qwerty), whether it’s this or the Asus P526 or the HTC Nike – Great to see GPS addition.
but the lack of a D-Pad is really bugging me about some of these devices, as does USB 1.1
As for the iPhone, about as useful to me as the dust it blends into.

I like the keypad addition; however, its non-conventional layout is a nuisance – why put the # * and 0 on the RHS?!
I’d also like to know whether the SMS can be typed with the keypad in the form of predictive text, like conventional mobile phones… I’d hate to have to ‘write’ all my SMS!
Does anyone know if the A702 has an FM receiver?
I just had a look at the review Adam listed above and it doesn’t have an FM radio.

I have had the A702 for a week now and still finding my way around it. I have bought it in Australia Perth.
The model in this country has 1GB of memory and a 64 MB rom
The keypad uses T9 for test input also you can use the soft keyboard. A neat feature is that you can read and receive SMS while on the phone (Vodafone Service Provider)
I have installed Tom Tom 6 but it comes with mio map v3.3 which I do not use.The gps display changes to phone if you receive a call while navigating, once the call is over it goes back to gps display. At the moment I have been in touch with mio tech support trying to find a way to set different ring tones for different callers in my phone book, so far no luck. Here in Australia did not come with Microsoft Outlook which is required to synch with a computer and thus an extra expense to take into account. Down side is battery life is poor very poor has to be charged daily. Usb port is slow and the camera does not have a built in lens cover. It is not 3G.
I have an A701 and LOVE it. When I bought it, there were few other WM phone devices with a built in GPS.
The major compromise (as with the new A702) is the smaller than standard 2.7in screen size. This makes the on-screen keyboard more difficult to use if you have fat fingers like me. I can see the A702 keyboard being an advantage here and with the better camera + WiFi I’m sure it will be a winner.
My only reservation is the idiotic placement of the usb socket which means that you can no longer just drop the device into a cradle to recharge. You will have to manually pluc the cable in the side too. This seems a retrograde step as I love the fact I can just drop my device into the car cradle and go.

Hi Pat the A702 is not a 3G or Next G phone it works on the GSM system you’ll have to ask 3 network if their network will keep on going Telstra is talking about shutting down
the gsm network in 2012, not to be confused with CDMA network.
I was pleased to pick up the A701 for the all round PDA/GPS thang. However, with WM5 it stinks! Abandoned calls, GPS app starts up when the battery indicates low, call voicetags start completely random apps. WTF? Maybe I bought a dud.
Windows Mobile is crap and I won’t be going near it or the A702 – new version or not.

all I work in a service and the iPhone is far from reliable…
We sold this month 8 and 4 got back because the display sucks. Apparently if you shake an iPhone it will destroy the screen… don’t buy it go for mio a702
Hi, i have Mitac A702 from Thailand, but i crazy with a lot firmware BUGS !!!! It’s difficult connect with WiFi because comunication stop and dont resolve fast. Canot read email form outlook and GPS it’s very very slowly for connect first time… camera is not good image and slowly but it’s write 3.2 megapixel… very strange!
)) sometime crash and need takeoff battery… and for end.. MITAC done make UPGRADE for all bugs ! so i crazy and wait somebody help me… Mitac company forget takecare this ! Dont buy this bad product if dont can resolve all problem..
You’re not alone with that, dude. I’d recommend for better pix press the cam button only to half, then allow the autofocus to work, then press fully.
But yeah, that Mitac doesn’t release any updates or patches, sucks!

Don’t even think about purchasing this phone.
Underpowered, buggy, and poorly designed. Expect large amounts of lag when trying to navigate thru menus. Mine died after a year, it wouldn’t even power up with the cord plugged in. Even a hard reset wouldn’t fix it.
Battery life is absolute crap. Didn’t even last 12 hours on standby.
My biggest regret was buying this phone.
Mio’s website and support are as buggy and badly designed as their product.
i like this phone. The battery will last 3-4 days with light used. Gps and wifi no problem on connecting, very fast. Camera very sharp and excellent on closeup snap!
