There’s been a lot of hype around the mobile download side of iTunes that will be rolled on June 29 -Â enabling Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone owners (future owners, that is) to download music straight from iTunes. Mobile music downloads are the future, and that’s why it’s nice to see Omnifone launching their MusicStation service in Sweden – beating Apple to the mobile music downloading punch! An Omnifone spokesman stated that “We have actually beaten iPhone to the market by two weeks on a global level,” adding MusicStation has signed deals with the four largest music labels – Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI Music and Warner Music International.
Don’t get us wrong, we love the Apple iPhone, but we also love to see other guys take a shot at Apple. The MusicStation service launched in Sweden yesterday, and will roll out in Europe, Asia, and Africa in the coming weeks. Norwegian Telenor subscribers can download unlimited songs for about $4 per week – and will work on about 80% of existing handsets out there today. We really like the weekly subscription model – download like crazy for one week, and you’re good for a month or two!
