Expand your wireless network – find the nearest COW!

B-Mobile in Bhutan uses COWs to expand wireless cellphone coverageIn another example of how the animal kingdom has crossed paths with the mobile industry, the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan’s mobile network, B-Mobile, has commissioned COWs to temporarily increase wireless coverage at festivals and other large, temporary gatherings. Well, actually, this isn’t really a good example, seeing as how the only link to the animal kingdom is the funny acronym. COW stands for Cell On Wheels – and is essentially a mobile base station that can be moved to areas of spotty cell coverage to supplement the current wireless infrastructure.

“COWS are used to provide expanded cellular network coverage or capacity at special events where a lot of people have gathered,” says Tandi Wangchu, B-Mobile general manager. He added that “…a COW will be needed to ease the mobile network congestion…” in the “coronation celebration next year in Changlimithang.”

We got a good laugh from this one. The title conjured images of cellular equipment-addled cows roaming the countryside – helping to increase cellular coverage. Still, that’s not such an outlandish proposition in a place like Bhutan! Now that would be a sight to see!
