Huawei M318: The Chinese think people don’t need features

By Stefan Constantinescu on Tuesday, June 19th, 2007 at 10:13 PM PST In MetroPCS, Sprint

2251_157×275.jpgThe FCC just approved this MetroPCS (NYSE: PCS) disgrace of technology. If we saw such a device in the emerging markets I would understand, but America is a nation of well off obese people. No Bluetooth, no camera, no speakerphone.

Hello and welcome to 1999.

Hey buddy thanks for your comment on MetroPCs new yet to come Huawei M318 but I think this is gonna be a great phone. Before trowing stones on the new phone lets try the understand why Metro did it.
Yes you are right, it is a very basic phone, no bluetooth, no speaker, no nothing. Perfect for the low income people that cant spend $300 dollars on a Motorola Z6m which has bluetooth, speakerphone, mp3 player, sd card slot, 2megapixel camera, bla, bla, bla.
I bet this will be a $99 phone that will drop price to $89 and than to $79.

  2. if you’re comfortable with the fact that starving people in Africa have mobiles with the same feature set as this device then power to ya. one would think with the spending power a typical American has they wouldn’t be buying something that so closely resembles hell.

Welcome to America! Where telecommunication taxes are super high (thanks for the gov.) and very well spent in supersonic airplanes, new weapons and of course to help you local school.

    Hey, Stefan,

You’re missing the point here. Take a look at the UT Starcom 7025, the Samsung R300, and the Nokia 2135 out of the MetroPCS Portfolio. They are all very basic, low cost phones. It’s also a perfect phone for those people that work in an industry that doens’t allow for camera phones to be used in their place of business.

This is an ENTRY LEVEL….I repeat, an ENTRY LEVEL handset. It’s not meant to have all the nice bells and whistles that people seem to be clamoring for when they can’t afford it.

Instead of damning a company about the lack of features on their first offering in the US, you should worry about all the other worries in the telecomunication’s industry.

I own one, and think it is a absolutely great phone. It does exactly what I want it to do, make and receive phone calls. The other big selling point is the sleek mute styling. No bright flahy colors, or massive amounts of flshing lights that so many handset manufactures use to entertain their easily distracted, cash poor, asset rich customers. I’m not in the third world, but I have money becuase I don’t waste money on features and gadgets I don’t need. Why do you think the economu is the way it is? The poor take loans out so they can by a full feature handset they don’t need.

yo man i got this phone yesterday, man. i looked at it man, it was definetly bad ass. it definetly has the fetures i need. it isnt too fancy but it isnt to dumb, ugly, or old. it is just the perfect phone to get your calls done and do ur business. it has the one main thing that we all get phones for: making calls. so before anyone makes any bad comments. use the phone and ull understand why it is such a great phone. it is the COOLEST phone for people that just want something basic.

  10. D says:

One feature I need is speakerphone. I used it all the time with my previous bottom-of-the-line metropcs phone. And this one claimed to have it – it’s written on the bottom of the box and in all the marketing descriptions on the web sites. Yet I couldn’t find it on the phone or in the manual. So what’s up with that? It really doesn’t have speakerphone?! If that’s the case, I’m going to return it.

  11. billy says:

to all the people out there who think the Huawei M318 does not have speakerphone, you’re WRONG!!! All you have to do is once your party answers push the center button TWICE, with a slight pause between pushes. So, you see, its not false advertising, IT REALLY DOES HAVE SPEAKER PHONE!! Yay! But regardless of that,…This phone is so basic and limited that its only a great phone if u are a child, a senior citizen, or RETARDED! SO, MAKE THE PAUSE WORTH THE PUSH!! PUSH IT GOOD!!!!!!!!! AND YOU’LL ENJOY IT!

  12. David says:

    This phone sucks.
Definetly not good for a teenager.

  13. amanda says:

hey stefan, this phone is just basic, people just want to make calls ,they dont want things that they cant afford and use, and why does that suddenly give you the right to judge chinese people?? i am chinese and im personally offended by your assumption, and by the way chinese people arent what you think,we do not eat dogs, they are also our best friends, and chinese people or like the japanese, they love to accesorize, when and if you go to china, you will learn and see the truth, and not assume on dumb things!
