India is Nokia’s third largest sector in terms of volume. They obviously want to hold on to that and are doing it by dominating the retail space. Urpo Karjalainen, Head of Nokia’s Asia-Pacific business said:
“In India there are today about 93,000 retail outlets. It’s a huge amount, and our phones are being sold in every single one.”
When asked about competitors penetrating those 93k shops he replied:
“I’m not saying it cannot be done, but it needs quite a bit of investment.”
With a market share of 50% in a country that adds 6 million mobile phone users a month, one has to ask: how long can you be the top dog?
