Motorola and Nokia lead the world in cameraphone segment – finally some good news for Motorola

With the global cameraphone market set to pass the 1 billion-handset mark this year, Strategy Analytics believes that the industry is entering its third-phase. The move from megapixel and features to quality and imaging experience will help drive the growth of the market – led by Finnish handset manufacturing giant Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and the US runner-up Motorola (NYSE: MOT).
Neil Mawston, Strategy Analytics associate director and chief mobile imaging analyst, states that, “Camera phones have been a huge success, with unit sales rising from three million in 2001 to 500 million last year. As CCD continues to lose the sensor wars in the mobile space, Micron, Omnivision and other CMOS vendors have been the prime beneficiaries.”
We’re glad to hear some good news for Motorola – finally. The second-largest handset manufacturer in the world has had its run of bad press (and not to mention financial performance) in recent months, so it’s nice to give them a nod for their acheivment. We can only hope that Motorola takes this news as encouragement to get back to what they do best – churn out the innovative hits that once defined the company (hopefully without their crappy OS).
